The Iceberg

It was really nice having an outside source come in to tell us about his experiences in which he has learned to have an open mind. I felt that Father Steve's reminder that a lot of people's cultures exist below the surface, and that it is most important to be mindful of this fact, was a great think to remember. Another good thing about his speech which I found interesting were his different examples in which he related the structure of languages to the cultures in which they are spoken. That really struck me, and I know now that I have never looked at languages in this way. Maybe now, after Father Steve's speech, the perspective of language in relation to culture will allow me to learn the language and understand the culture through each other, and hopefully make both jobs easier. - Felicia
