Article and Father Steve
This article shows the cultural differences that plague Chinese society as they constantly strive to westernize. Father Steve's lecture today relates to this article because he described the values that our families often assume we share. However, this is not always true, as demonstrated by Bella and her own family. Her parents talk about how they are conflicted between raising their daughter the traditional way versus the modernized way. When the author visits them years later, they live a much more furnished lifestyle with new modern appliances and material objects. Father Steve recognizes this cultural impact and I admired how he told us that in order to understand another culture, you must first understand your own. I also admired Father Steve's intelligent thoughts and interpretations of family customs and will take away from his lesson that learning the Chinese language does not solely revolve around vocabulary but also around experience.
